Hello,
An American living in Berlin here, so sorry for the English. I need some local help tracking down supplies.
I recently bought a grainfather. I want to clean it before my first brew day to get off any factory residue. What do people use to clean their Grainfather in Germany? In general, what cleaning and sterilizing agents do you use that are more cost effective than the specialized cleaning agents?

Re: Cleaning Solutions for a Grainfather
Hey Jonathan,
I usually use "Chemipro Oxi" or normal dishwasher tabs to clean the Main body and the grainbasket. Both work well for me. So if you are looking for a cheap option just use dishwasher tabs. For sterilization i always use "Star San" (i havent found a good cheap alternative for this sterilizing agent).
Have a good one.

Would something like this do the trick?

I ask because I have it under the sink.

Re: Cleaning Solutions for a Grainfather
I have been brewing with a Grainfather for years and whenever I got new stainless steel products I would treat it with PBW, believing that it would take care of the remaining manufacturing oils as well.
I recently bought new fermenters and for their first cleaning the manufacturer recommended treating it with Tri-Sodium-Phosphate (TSP) though, which incidentally is the same that SS Brewtech recommends for cleaning their stainless steel tanks before the first use. You can get it here: https://www.hobbybrauerversand.de/Trina ... sphat-1-kg
You can read up on TSP here: https://ssbrewtech.zendesk.com/hc/en-us ... eaning-FAQ
My CIP pump has not arrived yet, so I have not used TSP as of now. However, I am certain that it is the correct product for that particular first-time use.
For regular cleaning after every brew day I use enzybrew (as many people here do) which is really effective and friendlier to the environment than PBW for example. Star San is still my go-to sterilizing agent, but if sanitize fermenters via CIP I use a non-foaming agent (Chemipro CIP).
I'm living in Berlin as well, feel free to shoot me a PM if you are interested in talking more. I do have a 1kg bag of TSP here and am sure I don't need it all to clean two tanks - woulnd't mind sharing it.
Cheers,
Alex
