In English first (I'll Google Translate to German below)

Hey everyone, I just moved to Wiesbaden from Oregon this past July and we love living in Germany! I'll get this one out of the way—I'm not in the military, I work as a iOS/Android product developer making apps (first question I always get "are you in the military?")

I've been involved in brewing for a few years now and with the move to Germany I've got a few questions about how to continue brewing here!

1. Where do you buy brewing supplies? (grain, yeast, hops, etc)
2. Where do you buy supplies (propane burner, propane tank, brew kettles, etc) here in Germany?

I've seen a couple online stories like Hop & Grape in the UK, but I'd really like to know where I could buy authentic German grains, etc. Would you ever approach your local brewery here in Germany and ask if you can purchase a bag of grain?

Thanks!

Vielen Dank!

Welcome to Germany and welcome to hobbybrauer.de!

The links that have already been given above should get you started. I believe they are the most important ones.

Where in Oregon are you from? We've got relatives there, and last year we travelled a big chunk of the fantastic Oregon West Coast. For obvious reasons, we also spent several days in Portland. We had a great time.

From what I hear, a number of German maltsters sell bags directly to home brewers. You could try calling the ones in your area:
https://www.google.de/search?q=mälzerei+wiesbaden

If you're not opposed to electric brewing, it's a common choice here to use induction plates or electric canning pots - that may be an alternative to gas burners, depending on what batch size you're typically brewing.

Also a welcome from me,

to answer your last question too: Yes of cause, ask your local brewery to get grain, malt or yeast. Normally they are cooperative.

And to add this: the google translation is very funny. Do you really want to buy a bag made of grain (translated back to English? :Grübel :Ahh )

Never mind and best regards,

Ursus

PS: You see, most of us are able to assist in different languages. Don't hesitate ...

Ha! @Ursus007 that's too funny. I've thought that Google Translate didn't do a very good job translating but now I know for sure! Definitely don't want to buy a bag made from grain ;)

My closet brewery is Mainz-Kastel Brauhaus and I've been thinking about asking if they'd set up a grain purchasing arrangement, only if it's difficult to find or source online. http://www.brauhaus-castel.de/

Looking forward to getting plugged in here!
Prost

Welcome to Germany,

one thing you need to notice before brewing your own beer here, is taxes and registration.
Yes, in germany you need to register your brewing activity to the local "Hauptzollamt" (Duty)
You are allowed to produce 200L of beer per year taxfree. If you brew more, than you have
to pay taxes to your "Hauptzollamt" - About 5 € / 100L.

Take a look here wiki/doku.php/zoll
If you have any Questions about that, just ask - we will help.

Hi,

nice to have you here. I'm sure you will have fun here, it's a good brewing community.

You should definitly join us at the monthly hobby brewers meeting for the Rhein Main Area. Some UK/US guys are usually there as well and it's a lot of fun!

If you like I just send you a message once we have the next one.

Cheers,

Nikolas

Welcome to Germany!
If you're looking for propane: Just ask at your local DIY market like Bauhaus or Obi. I use electricity, so i've no idea how much propane gas is at the moment, but i think around 15€ for 11kg?

Hi, ich könnte auch in Englisch, wollte aber mal den Google Übersetzer benutzen. Dies kam heraus:

Hello American colleague ,
nice that you here found their way to us . Some of your questions have already been answered. My recommendation would Amihopfen . The store is operated by a very nice fellow countryman of yours . Daniel is sure to assist you in many matters of procurement and has also self- brewing experience .
Welcome here and always good Sud .

Hey there fellow countryman living in Germany. :) It's a longshot if you still read the thread or not (hopefully so), but I'm a new-ish hobby brewer in Darmstadt, so not far from Wiesbaden at all. Did you ever get started with your homebrewing here in Germany, or find any good resources in the Rhein-Main area?
